It has been such an honor to photograph Selena and Josh’s wedding proposal at Mears Park, their Lake Superior engagement session at Madeline Island, and now their wedding day at Lowertown Event Center! I have enjoyed getting to know this wonderful couple both as their photographer and friend. These two first met during a PowerHockey tournament in Detroit during the summer of 2015. For those unfamiliar with the sport, PowerHockey is similar to floor hockey, but all the players play in power wheelchairs. Josh was one of the players, and Selena was an assistant to one of his teammates. When Selena and Josh met, they immediately clicked and shared a lot of laughs. But the timing wasn’t quite right. The following year, the tournament was in Philadelphia. Selena and Josh ran into each other again. They got to talking and recalled their special connection at the Detroit tournament. This time, the timing was just right! As Selena puts it, “We haven’t stopped running out of things to talk and laugh about since!”
When planning their big day, Selena and Josh really wanted their wedding day to truly reflect who they are. They chose Lowertown Event Center in Saint Paul as their venue because it’s across the street from Mears Park, the same place where they had their first date and where Josh proposed. In Selena’s wedding vows, she even joked that they should have their kids in Mears Park. To make their big day feel unique to them, they incorporated many personal touches. First off, their wedding ceremony included traditional Ojibwe segments in ode to Selena’s Native American heritage. They chose a vintage theme in honor of Mad Men, one of their favorite TV shows. Since they both love tacos, they decided to have a taco bar for dinner. They also share an interest in local breweries and asked Thirsty Whale Bakery to make their cake with Surly Furious IPA. Lastly, Selena wanted to include her favorite movie, Nightmare Before Christmas, into some of their details. Since the main characters Jack and Sally share the same initials as Josh and Selena, the couple chose to have the cake topper, cufflinks, and champagne flutes represent these two characters and their sweet romance. Their day was so much fun and I have to give a huge shout-out to Ask for the Moon Events for executing the couple’s big day and making sure everything was perfect for these two!
