Maddie, a Twin Cities wedding planner and owner of Ask for the Moon Events, shared a few tips for couples with us. In her years of wedding planning, she has noticed that many couples often forget these 5 things while planning their wedding:
1. Weigh an Invitation and Bring One to the Wedding
Before you mail your invitations to your guests, bring a fully assembled one to the post office to be weighed for the correct postage. Double check that all of your inserts as well as the RSVP card and envelope are included! It would be an expensive headache to have the invitations returned due to incorrect postage- ugh!
Also, don’t forget to save one stationery suite to bring to the wedding reception! Your photographer can get pictures of it with the rings or bridal bouquet! So pretty!
2. Wedding Party Lunch & Vendor Meals
Your wedding day is planned out to the minute: hair, makeup, get dressed, take photos, ceremony start time- hold on a second…what about lunch!? Make sure to schedule a quick timeout to get something in your stomach and drink a lot of water! Have Jimmy Johns deliver or ask a friend to pick up a deli tray from the grocery store. You’ll need your strength!
Make sure you include your fantastic vendor team in the meal count for the reception. They’ve been working non-stop all day to make your wedding amazing! Ask the caterers if they offer discounted meals for vendors.
3. Reception Band and Miscellaneous Details
Having a fantastic cover band at your reception is a great way to get the energy high and your guests on the dance floor. But couples tend to forget (or not know) that bands set up earlier in the day then leave the reception venue until it’s time to return for the dance party. So who will introduce the wedding party for the grand entrance, supply the microphone for speeches, and play dinner music?
Prior to the big day, ask the band those questions. Most bands will allow you to use their microphones and plug an iPod into their speakers. But if one doesnβt permit the use of their equipment unsupervised, there are many affordable rental companies that have amps & mics available. Chat with an outgoing member of your wedding party or a crazy cousin about being your emcee. It is always more fun having a good friend introduce you into the reception!
4. Keeping Gifts & Cards Safe
Before the wedding day ask about security at the reception venue. It would be terrible if some wedding crasher walked off with the box of cards or any of the gifts! If possible, place the gift table away from any entrances/exits. Assign a close friend or your wedding planner to hide or lock up the gifts after the guests sit down for dinner and remember to appoint someone to take the gifts home at the end of the evening.
5. Marriage License
Gotta make it official! In your wedding day timeline schedule a moment to sign your marriage license. Oddly enough, this important part of the day tends to get lost in the shuffle, but all that is needed are few minutes right before or immediately after the ceremony. Check with your officiant to see if they have a preference. And ask your photographer to take some photos of the signing!
