Kathryn and Ben had their wedding ceremony at St. Kate’s Our Lady of Victory Chapel followed by a reception at the Minneapolis Event Center. Although these two live in Chicago, they wanted to have their wedding in Minneapolis since their families are in Minnesota. Kathryn went to undergrad school at St. Kate’s and always pictured herself getting married in the beautiful Our Lady of Victory Chapel. Since they already knew their ceremony location, they chose the Minneapolis Event Center for the reception because of the convenient location, large space, and the beautiful bridal suite.
Let’s rewind though. These two met way back in the summer of 2007 while they were both working at Kay Jewelers. Shortly after he started, Ben decided to move on to a different career path. Him and Kathryn remained friends and eventually started dating. On March 29, 2015, Ben convinced Kathryn to wake up at six in the morning (despite her just returning from a trip to Las Vegas) to take sunrise pictures in front of Chicago’s Millenium Park’s bean. Involved in the ploy, the couple’s friends Nicholas and Jill told Kathryn that they had to see the bean at sunrise before they moved to New York. So Kathryn got out of bed and the two couples went out to brunch and then took group photos in front of the bean. During the photos, Ben got down on one knee. At first, Kathryn thought he was joking around, but then he pulled out the ring box and she realized it was very real! Of course, she said yes!
The couple has always enjoyed boating together, and knew they had to incorporate their love of wood boats, sailing, and water skiing into the wedding. This is a symbolic hobby for them since during their 9 years together, they often had to “adjust their sails in life”-especially when they had a long distance relationship for two years while Ben started his business in Chicago and Kathryn was at graduate school in Philadelphia. To tie in this theme, their reception decor includes an anchor guestbook, their escort cards are paper boats, and their table linens are blue and white! They even incorporated their love for boats and being out on the water into the engagement session on Lake Minnetonka. Check out their engagement photos here!
